How to Track White Label Backlinks for Your Clients

Faizan IftikharBy Faizan Iftikhar·Updated November 2, 2026·7 min read

When you resell link building, your client never talks to the people who built the links. You’re the one who has to prove each link is real, live and worth what they paid. That takes a simple system: check every link on delivery, monitor it afterwards, and report it in a way the client understands. Here’s how to set that up.

Quick answer: Track white label backlinks in one shared sheet or tool, with one row per link: live URL, target page, anchor text, rel attribute, indexing status, site metrics and date. Check each link by hand on delivery, monitor it monthly with a backlink tool, and replace or report any link that drops. Google Search Console only shows a sample of links, so don’t rely on it alone.

Key takeaways

  • Verify every link yourself on delivery. Don’t forward a provider’s report without opening the pages.
  • Record the rel attribute. A nofollow or sponsored link is not the same deliverable as a followed one.
  • Check the linking page can be indexed: no noindex tag, no robots block, no canonical pointing elsewhere.
  • Re-check links monthly. Links get removed, pages get deleted, and sites change.
  • Report outcomes the client cares about (rankings, traffic to linked pages) next to the link list.

What to record for every link

Use one row per link. These are the fields worth keeping, and why:

FieldWhy it matters
Client and order IDTies each link to an invoice and a campaign
Live URL (the linking page)The proof. Clients should be able to click it
Target URLShows which client page the link supports
Anchor textNeeded to keep the anchor mix natural over time
Rel attributeFollowed, nofollow, sponsored or ugc
PlacementIn the main content, author bio, sidebar or footer
Linking page indexed?A link on a page Google doesn’t index passes little value
Site metricsDR or DA, estimated organic traffic, niche relevance
Date live and last checkedNeeded for monitoring and replacement windows
StatusLive, lost, changed, replaced

A note on rel attributes: Google introduced rel="sponsored" and rel="ugc" in 2019 alongside nofollow, and treats all three as hints rather than strict rules. Agree with your client up front which types the order includes, so the report matches what was sold.

How to verify a link on delivery

  1. Open the live URL and find the link on the page, not just in the source code.
  2. Check the anchor and target match the order, including the exact URL (https, trailing slash, no redirect).
  3. Inspect the link (right-click, Inspect) to see the rel attribute.
  4. Check the page can be indexed. Look for a noindex meta tag, a canonical tag pointing to another URL, or a robots.txt block. Any of these limits the link’s value.
  5. Check the page is in Google with a site: search for the exact URL. New pages can take days or weeks, so re-check later if it’s not there yet.
  6. Sanity-check the site: real organic traffic in your SEO tool, content related to the client’s niche, and no obvious “write for us” link farm pattern across every post.

Log the result the same day. If something fails, raise it with the provider while the order is still fresh.

Monitoring links after they go live

A link that was live at delivery can disappear later. Sites get redesigned, posts get updated, and some publishers remove links after a few months. Set a simple rhythm:

  • Week 1–4: confirm the linking page gets indexed.
  • Monthly: automated check that every link is still live, still pointing at the right URL, and still has the same rel attribute.
  • Quarterly: manual spot check of a sample, plus a look at whether the linking sites still have traffic.

Tools for tracking backlinks

ToolGood forLimits
Google Search Console (Links report)Free; shows links Google itself has found; export to CSV or SheetsOnly a sample; doesn’t say if a link is nofollow; tables capped at 1,000 rows
Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic, MozNew and lost link alerts, anchor and rel data, site metricsPaid; each crawls the web differently, so counts won’t match
Reporting platforms (e.g. AgencyAnalytics)Branded client dashboards with backlink monitoringMonthly cost per client or seat
A shared Google SheetSingle source of truth for orders, status and notesManual unless you add a link checker

The Search Console limits come from Google’s own documentation: the report “isn’t a comprehensive list of every link” and doesn’t flag nofollow. Use it to confirm Google has seen a link, and a third-party tool for everything else.

Reporting links to your client

A good white label report is short and under your agency’s brand. Include:

  • Links delivered this period, with live URL, target page, anchor and rel attribute
  • Indexing status of each linking page
  • Any lost or changed links and what’s being done about them
  • Results next to the links: rankings and organic traffic for the pages that received links

Avoid burying the client in raw metrics. One table of links plus three or four result numbers is usually enough.

When a link disappears

  1. Confirm it’s really gone (the page may have moved or the link may now redirect).
  2. Check your agreement with the provider. Many white label link building providers replace links lost within a set period, often 6–12 months; get that window in writing before you order.
  3. Update the sheet status and note it in the next client report. Clients trust you more when you flag a lost link before they find it.

FAQ

How do I check if a backlink is dofollow?

Open the linking page, right-click the link and choose Inspect. If the link has no rel attribute, or none of nofollow, sponsored or ugc, it’s a followed link. Browser extensions and SEO tools can show this too.

Why doesn’t a new backlink show in Google Search Console?

Search Console only shows a sample of links, and Google has to crawl and process the linking page first. New links can take weeks to appear, and some never will even though Google knows about them.

How often should I check white label backlinks?

Verify each link by hand on delivery, run an automated check monthly, and spot-check a sample every quarter.

What should a white label link building report include?

The live URL, target page, anchor text, rel attribute and indexing status for each link, any lost links, and ranking or traffic results for the pages that received links, all under your agency’s branding.
